I fished Saturday 12/23 with Steve Conner on my 15 Gregor, Bassomatic. We launched at 6am but were met with the heavy fog that was predicted. A quick run to the harbor entrance told us it was way too dangerous to even think of going outside--total radar material. Nonetheless, we saw a few unequiped folks
head out anyway. It was so stinking cold and damp we opted for a hot breakfast at the Jolly Roger--good call. At 815am, the fog lifted enough to be safe and we started fishing the Dana Pipe. We began a slow pick on mixed bass to 2 pounds using mostly 4 inch Big Hammers in halloween and brownback/purple/silver belly. Steve got few on a power grub. We then ran south to a couple hardbottom spots for the same kind of action on a 50/50 mix of calicos and sandies. The fish came from 45-60 feet and wanted only the 4
inch Hammers, 5 inch was too big today. Best retrieve was a slow one of 5-6 cranks followed by a freespool drop with most bites coming on the drop portion. The big swell showed up, too which ruled out fishing in tight. Water was 57.8-59.2 and just offcolor green. All 20 or so we bass we caught were released. We were done by 12 noon.

Sounds fun. I had to open the shop at 6am, it was cold and foggy. Couldn't see PCH for a while, but this is the kinda weather I love. But, being on a boat w/out the right electronics in that stuff is scary, heck it can get hairy w/ the right stuff. Saw Doho on the way home, it looked fun, so you know that swell had size. Stop by Billy's sometime and introduce yourself. I only work a couple of days a week, but usually there on Sat. morning or afternoon.

Billy's? where and what is that, Ed? I don't live in Dana so I don't know all the cool places. Merry Christmas.

Sorry bout that, it's the tackle shop on PCH right after you cross the bridge after coming off the 5. There's an AM/PM and a Carl's JR in front. Do you launch out of DP often?

I almost always fish out of dana. I can go north and ride it downhill when the wind comes up. There's a ton of hardbottom down south too.

I've worked seasonally on the Reel Fun and Sum Fun since El Nino. Don't know what I'll do this year though. I like Dana a lot though. There is lots of options close to home, plus it's a quick ride to get out of the harbor. Only thing that sucks though is the Mello Boys. You probably don't get much bait, but since the O-side boat has been doing the bait ( this is a winter thing only unfortunately) it has been tons better. Puts the Mellos to shame.

I've probably seen you out on the water, not too many bass boats out there. Must be nice for boiler fishing, especially if you have a trolling motor up front. Fished a friends trihull up in Laguna it was nice to pull in so tight, those 60' boats can only go so shallow. I've taken my tube out to a couple spots, then you can get in real tight. You ever fish Treasure Island? Those boilers are a blast.

Keep us posted on how you do out there.
