#6592, "Topanga, 6-25"

Another decent day on the water. We started off going south to the Charthouse, I got a short halibut there along with two small sandies and a little brown fish (either a small calico or a senorita) roll on my lure at the surface, didn't get a good look at him. All of those fish were on the fastrac with one small sandy on the 4" Green Sardine FT. My dad came up from his dive and said it was murky and he didn't see any 'buts because of the warm temps so we went back up to Topanga Point where we had some success on Sunday. On the paddle up there I got a sandy on a 5" Rainbow trout Big Hammer and a 6" mack on the fastrac (I wish I would have had a flyline rod ready to go!) Once up to the point I hooked up with 3 more sandies, with one going 3#. Two of those were on the Mackeral FT and the big one on a Prizm Smelt Big Hammer. Later I got into a small area with some halibut, I got two fish that went 20" of so on two casts and I look over and my dad has a huge halibut! I thought it was at least 35# but it later weighed 33.1 pounds and 42". He got it with a pole spear in 9ft of water! If only I had casted a little more to the right...Another small halibut around 20" and I called it a day. All three halibut I caught up there were on a Mackeral colored FT. I don't think I fished in more than 15 ft. of water all day, that's where all the bait is anyway.

On a pole spear yet? That is sweeeet! My neighbor speared a legal flattie over the weekend (about 26 inches)...it had a broken hook and line in its mouth too. Water is clear, I may check out Gravels (Salt Creek) with my Hawaiian Sling! I prefer not to go out alone though from a saftey standpoint...if anyone wants to check it out let me know (unless the surf comes up)!

Yeah, I was out freediving on Sunday after we got the yaks loaded and saw all kinds of cool stuff. Small spider crabs, leopard sharks, sandies, calicos and rockfish. I saw a big fish buried in the sand and went down to check it out and it turned out to be a huge shovelnose guitarfish. I also saw some horn sharks really close to shore, kind of scary with all those surfers off of the point. Good luck if you get out, as long as this South swell stays down it should be clear!
