Fished from my yak just north of san simeon in the huge expanse of kelp beds in front of the windsurfers beach. Water was clear (20' vis), cold(as always), and still enough that you could see the few bait fish around dimpling the surface. Threw every color of grub/fish traptype rig I had, all for a few johnny cod. Finally went outside the kelp, a good 1.5 miles offshore, in 60' of water and picked up a
14lb halibut on a rootbeer scampi- go figure. I wrestled him into my hatch, w/out a gaff or net. Fortunately, he cooperated on the
fourth attempt. I think I'll bring along more equipment (gaff, larger net) next time. Andy

Cool report. San Simeon is pretty cool. Some friends of mine used to do well in a little dinghy they would beach launch fishing the outside of the kelps with chrome irons and fish traps.
14lbs is a good halibut especially with no net!

Back in the 70's we used to kill ling cod, cabezon and sea trout by the lighthouse in a rubber raft.

You guys are crazy,

San Simeon in a dingy? The light house in a rubber raft? I've never been to a scarier beach than the lighthouse. Huge waves, total beach break, cold and isolated. Maybe you were hitting it in the summer months...

The central coast is a way feral place, and you guys have my respect for charging like that. Hardcore.
