#2282, "Port San Luis Bait Situation?"

Has anyone heard of bait in the receivers around Port San Luis? Any bait in the water? I was out there about a month ago and it was pretty dead. I launched off of Avila Beach and powered on down to Shell Beach for just one rockfish on the squid tipped scampi. However, big halibut action can really heat up down there right along the kelp lines, especially when water temps get up to where they are now. That section of the coast receives very little fog (so characteristic of this area) which allows the sun to considerably heat the shallows. Live bait would defenitely help.

Hi,,,I,ve fished near cave rock and Avila Bay with moderate luck...How's the fishing these days? I caught a nice butt just to the right of the pier near the rocks a couple of years ago. I may be going up there next Monday...It should start to heat up... Thanks,,Jeff....P>S I usually fish via Kayak these days...

The bait situation is both good and bad! The chovies are TINY little pinheads that everyone hates and complains about, but for the first time in who knows how long, Deke has had squid in therer this weekend. My friend fished south of Port on Sunday and landed a 25lber. Go toss em some live bait and you should do well!

Till Later,
Joel

To fish, or not to fish, what a stupid question!!

Hey, thanks for the response. Very nice to hear that there is some life in the receivers. I'm hoping to get out there next week when I'm all done with finals...and my college career for that matter. Glad to hear big fish are being landed. I've not fished Avila/Shell Beach recently but do know that it produces big ol' buts. Most of my experience has been from a float tube about 200 yards north of the Sea Cliffs Hotel and about 50-75 yards off shore. Water is about 15'. Kayaks are perfect for this situation. You may even be able to launch it from the beach just below the Sea Cliffs when the break is down. Good luck out there!
