Ok reel experts. A while back I decided to Newell out my jigmaster. I put the new drags and gears in there ( 5:1 ). I wasn't sure what kind of grease to use on the drags so I just used some heavy automotive grease. Well that was obviously a mistake since the drag totall sucks! So the question is, what grease should I use on the drag washers and are there any other tricks for getting it to be smooth.

jeeeeeeze buddy, that's fo sho not the right kine o' grease. first off, i like my drags dry. they're pleanty smooth (ht-100s), but if you feel the need to grease them, use shimano dragg'r grease. Smear a light coat on both sides of the disk. and by light, i mean really light, just so it barley covers the surface. i'm not sure how to fix what you've done though. i know that white gas is the clean everything solvent used on reels, but I'm not sure about drag washers.

I've never used a Newell but I think most drags are dry. The only ones I know of that use grease are the Diawa SL reels and some of the larger stuff fer tuna.

Thanks for the info Chris and Lief, you guys are right about the drags being dry. I talked to Brian on the phone last night and he pointed it out too. So I tried drying off the newell drags and putting them back in. They were much better but not great. So I said forget it and put back the old Penn drags inside of the newell 5:1 gears. This worked great. Smooth as it used to be with the high speed retrieve. Duh Rob...
