To the swimbait Yodas:

I usually rig my 3" Hammers with home-eyed 1/8-1/4 oz darter heads. The fit at the head isn't great, but it's true that the thin wire hooks are better suited for the small baits. Cabela's has some living eye jig heads that might work, and Owner makes a nice darter head, but I have yet to find shad-type heads with eyes coupled with quality Mustad wire hooks. Do these exist and are they available from Fishco? I know the fish probably won't care, but the rigged 3" baits would look great with heads shaped to match.

TL,

CC

You want 1/8 and 1/4 oz matzuo heavy metal heads..they are painted and have an inverted "V" bottom that adds a lot of action to a swimbait...especially on the drop and a steady grind.
They use high-quality fine wire hooks, and the eyes are prizm with a black eyeball. These are really nice lead heads, and the 1/8 oz. is ideal for 3" hammers. I have simply murdered bass on these.
I get mine at Sportmart, three for about 3 bucks.

Quietman,

Thanks for the tip. I couldn't find the heads at Sportmart so I ordered some through Matzuo's website. I'll take them for a test spin next week--I may have to try Dana Pt., if there are any fish left by next Friday! :)

You are welcome!

I bought all the jig at SM MVJ...
They really work great!
Now I gotta find more #13 green back 'chovie Big hammers...
...or here's a trick, buy a butane powered soldering iron (radio shack) and you can fix a trshed jig in seconds, out on the big salty!

The smallest "shad" type head Fishco currently makes is 1/4 oz. and it has the thicker wire hook. I use the Assalt darter heads (made by Fishco) or the round ball heads in 1/8, 3/16, and 1/4 oz.

Fishco has been tossing around the idea of making smaller "shad type" heads with light wire hooks for the 3" baits but to be honest the darters or round balls work fine. They are very similar to the Owner heads.
