Launched out of Big Break at 6:30am. We fished for Stripers 75% of the time, Rat-L-Traps & red Bomber crankbaits. Flipped tules & standing water for the rest of the time, Senkos & Jigs.
I caught about 15 stripers (with only 2 keepers) and 2 largemouth, all while casting chrome Rat-L-Traps in Franks Tract & False River. I didn't catch anything flipping a jig. My friend caught about 8 stripers and 6 largemouth. He caught a few small largemouth while flipping. Our two biggest largemouth were around 2.5 lbs.
At 6:45am my friend lost a 10 - 15lb. striper. It hit right at the boat, was on for 10 seconds and came off.
I will never, EVER fish with a Rat-L-Trap without first changing to Gamakatsu wide gap treble hooks. Its not worth the pain and heartache of losing a big fish right at the boat, or missing 30% - 50% of the strikes in a day. I fished with a guy last year that had changed all of his hooks to the Gamakatsu EWG's, and we hooked 90% of our strikes. He was ADAMENT about how much it improved the fishing. He was right. It was night and day compared to Saturday's results fishing the stock hooks.
