#14170, "S. Mishun 9/23/06"

My friend actually left a note on my studio door many years ago that said, “Gone to mishun, come down and find us” Spelling was not his thing.

Took the kids to South Mission. Got there at 8am. Nicely uncrowded. Set up some 6lb test rigs and hooked up some Gulp sandworms broken into 1” pieces. After about 15-20 minutes I hooked the first fish. As I’m running over to show my kids what kind of fish we’re trying to catch, I see that my daughter is also reeling one up the beach. Pretty cool.

I named mine Tiamat(after the 5 headed hydra) she named hers Superfreak(after the Rick James 70’s mega-hit)then we threw them in a bucket to die.

Each one, teach one. The finer points of Ooolieism.

Keep the faith,…

Then my other kid got on the board.

We made a short move and it got really good. Barred surf perch were coming on strong.

After about 90 minutes of fun, the conditions changed. Suddenly everything became difficult. The waves changed and some loose kelp rolled up. Tangled lines were constant. I could not keep 3 poles rigged at the same time, as fast as I could rig a new one, one of the others would be ruined. We had 13 BSP and we wanted 15. The last 2 were hard to come by. It was very much an exercise in patience for me, I was starting to get frustrated. We did end up getting the last 2 and we were happy.

After that we walked from South Mission to where the boardwalk ends up past Crystal Pier. Pretty long walk. My feet are taxed. We walked up on the cement and back on the sand. As far as I can tell, it’s about a 6 mile round trip.

TIP- Don’t bother harvesting small barred surf perch. Not worth the effort. OI!
