#883, "September 23, Goleta Pipe"

Me, Daniel, and my non fishing friend Tristin all headed to the pipe this morning. We actually ran around a little bit, but went to the pipe first. There was lots of bait, tiny little anchovies, but not many fish around. They were probably all full of anchovies. Tristin tried to make some bait, but her efforts were useless. I'm sure a flylined bait through the kelp would've gotten bit. We ran over to the kelp in the area where we usually float tube, except farther offshore. Down toward that hut. I finally managed a short calico, and a bit later after drifting through the kelp got a 14" calico. Daniel and I were both missing fish left and right and if it were possible to do in my boat, we'd be jumping up and down screaming profanities (actually, half of that we did do...). Daniel finally resorted to his go to bait, a white twin tail scampi on a red leadhead. He says it kills the sandbass and apparently he was right cause he pulled two little sandies on that thing. He also got a short white seabass. We stayed in that area for a while but it slowed down (but we did see two dolphins come right through the kelp and we chased em around for a little bit) so we went back to the pipe. Nothin there, we ran to campus point, bigger swell but still nothin. In front of the stairs, nothin. Back to the pipe, I got a short white seabass that followed my plastic right to the boat and I saw him chase it and then eat it. It was funny, he was still hot when I got him to the boat, so I freespooled him a little bit and then played him back to the boat to tire him out. We shot back over to the kelp by the hut but no more biters. Good colors were green sardine (was there any doubt?), normal sardine (that one that looks like green sardine, but has more brown in it), daniel's white scampi, and I also got bit on one of our own creations, a green w/ black back. Water was clear in some places, cloudy in others, mostly glassy but at times got a little wind on it. Rain clouds hovered over the mountains most of the day but never came over us. Tomorrow morning, Seahawk.
