Well apparently the salmon aren’t done yet, me and my buddy Matt fished the Santa Barbara sport fishing clubs annual salmon derby today. We started out mooching in 100-130ft of water off Rincon point then worked our way towards Arco island for nothing but BIG cudas and tiny mackerel.. About 11:30 the trollers started getting bit so since I actually brought my downriggers along we thought we would give trolling a try. We didn’t go 5min before one of my rods pops loose, unfortunately is was another cuda. After another 20min or so the same rig goes off and this time a 24in salmon hits the deck! After that we spent the next three hours trolling for nothing although several of the other boats in the area limited out! I want to say there were about a dozen salmons weighed in for the tourney topped by a 18lbr (gilled & gutted) Me I ended up with fifth place, not bad considering I didn’t even think we were going to get any salmons to begin with :-)…..Tomorrow Calico fishing! :-)….Captain Larry
P.S. I forgot to mention the bulk of the fish were caught today on red crocks, although my fish came on a sardine rigged on a clear/ green rotary off a green hotspot flasher ..
