#1277, "Seahawk: 12-31-00 Last day for rockfish-awesome"

Bent on milking every penny out of my fishing license as well as getting the last official day of fishing for rockfish before the two month ban, a couple of us jumped on the Seahawk.

It was an awesome trip. We caught rockfish left and right - and not those little guys that end up floating on top of the water and keeping the pelicans happy. At several points throughout the day we were getting fish every time we dropped down. And we were bringing up some hogs - BIG reds and chuckleheads! My first hookup I had two big reds.

For some reason, Merit had decided not to go to the islands and said he was taking us to his "Secret" red snapper spot. I was suprised to be taking the quality of fish that we were taking at only a couple of miles off of Goleta. And he did try to keep the spot a secret two as more than once we jetted away (with lines still in the water) to get away from boats that were heading to our spot too mooch.

And get this, some guy caught a chucklehead that weighed around 7 pounds three ounces (jackpot). Merit looked this up and it turned out to be the record! The guy who caught it was filling out the DFG paperwork but then decided not to go ahead with it as there was a $35 fee for the scale certification - what a jackass!

What a great day of fishing. This is what I truly HOPED my last day of SWRF for two months would be like. As always, the crew of the Seahawk were on the ball and helpful!
