My buddy and I went surf perch fishing near the coal oil island in Ventura, and it was WIDE OPEN SURF PERCH! Low tide was at 1:30pm, and we fished the incoming tide from 3pm-6pm.
Conditions were perfect and the best action was closer to the tide change from 3-4:30. In that first hour and a half, we caught about 15 perch each, some were up to 1.25 lbs. Plus, my buddy hooked what was either a corbina or a small seabass (it broke off about 15 feet away and we only saw the yellowish fins and a silver/bronze flash).
We used 2" Berkeley Power Grubs in the motoroil color. I've heard that you should use scents, but didn't have any, so we used the Power Grubs with success. By far the best perch fishing I've ever had, and we probably ended up with a total of 40 perch between the two of us, all catch and release.
