#74, "islands"

well, the plan was to head for west santa cruz and get some boiler rock calicos in my mom's boss' (Fred) 22' Sea Ray. We pushed off at like 9:30, headed out into the fog and about a third of the way there, visibility was about 100 feet. after almost plowing into somebody fishing in the middle of the channel we decided to head down south instead of the islands. we hit various kelp beds on the way down south for no fish. i did however lose like 4 plastics. so, with that loss and hook line and sinker not being open at 8 o clock in the morning (well after most people go out fishing) i was hurtin in the plastics box. the best i could scrounge up was a 5 inch green sardine on a one ounce plain lead jighead. we decided to hit the oil island and on the first cast, on the drop i was letting out line, and letting out line, and letting out line to hit bottom and i said, how deep are we? fred said, about 60 feet. i'd let out about 80 feet. i payed real close attention to the line and saw a slight little twitch, twitch. i backed up into the power position of destruction and set the hook home. right off the fish felt solid. i brought it up after it made a couple runs and turned out to be my best sand bass of the season. it measured at 16 inches and i couldn't get a weight on her because i forgot my damn scale. well, as we all know if you catch a fish on the first cast you're screwed for the rest of the day as was the case here. so, that was the only fish of the day but at least it was a decent fish. and hey- i got to miss school so it worked out pretty good, i mean... i was sick (cough cough)
