#1867, "Boat questions"

I'm just about ready to buy a used fishing boat, 14-18 feet long, freshwater only. I'm pretty much set on aluminum because of the price and weight. I have a toyota 4 banger for towing.
But I'm not sure of the hull shape. I would like to be able to build a platform to stand up and fish on. Would this be stable on a v hull such as a gregor? Any suggestions are appreciated....

I have a 15 foot gregor and have a forward casting deck the same level as the front bench. I mostly sit in the chair up front but do stand a little bit in calm water like a lake (I almost never do that in the ocean). Gregors are a flatter vee and of a wider beam than most other brands in that size and style of boat. You might find a modified vee or a jon boat style more stable but you will slap the water more running in choppy conditions (probably not an issue if you're only lake fishing). Check out the pic of Rob's on his "new boat" post on one of the boards here. Your truck will tow an aluminum fine--I towed mine with a honda accord and now with a subaru outback no prob.

Rick,

For a freshwater platform boat 14' to 18' in length, you should check out the Carolina Skiff. They are a stable flat bottom boat that don't weigh much. The 13'8” model is only 420 lbs and the 18'8” is only 750 lbs. They are ready for stand-up fishing at the bow or a chair if you like. You can check out the URL below.

Good luck with whatever boat you choose :-)
