#14294, "Vicarious motives 4/13/06"

Put on my fishing guide hat and took the family down to the big bay to fish the morning outflow. We launched at 7am and started fishing right in front of the ramp. I had found some sandbass in this area a few days ago by accident.

First fish of the day. We were long lining 1.5oz Spinbombs on 2 poles, one with braid and a 20’ leader of 15lb mono, and the other with 20lb test and a 3’ leader of mono. The low stretch lines help the girls hook fish. Here’s my other kid with keeper number 2, as Mom is hooked up in the background.

We never got more than a couple hundred yards away from the ramp. There was zero wind and a pretty good tide pulling. We had nice drifts, all we had to do was avoid the US navy ships every once in a while which was fine, because we would just reset our drifts everytime one came through. Between the shuffle rods we had a 10lb drop shot rod with various Bass Assassins on it. It helps add to the action and keeps the girls busy. Mom was clocking lot’s of dink fish with the drop shot rod, mostly sandies and a couple lizardfish thrown in for good measure.

On one of Mom’s turns on the shuffle rod,… she connects and proceeds to land the biggest bass of the day making her contribution to the harvest. Into the live well with you!! A nice 19-20”er

My daughter hooks and lands the fourth worthy victim at 10:30am just as the wind started to blow in the wrong direction.

After that we called it a day and got back home early. We landed about 12 fish in a few hours, mostly small stuff on the DS rod. It took some work to fill the live well. I had 2 longline rods working at all times. Many cast came in fishless and lot’s of the fish we did catch were smallish, but there are some nice sandies around Shelter Island right now, most of them did not show up on the sonar. They are hugging the bottom for the most part. There’s lot’s of floating kelp around too so go weedless if you can.

The only one who could ever outfish me, was the son of a preacher man. If we would have caught one more bass, we would have had a nice tourny stringer. Get you some!!

Simidude, I called out for you at about 7:30 or 8am on 72, but alas,…you didn’t respond. Hope you and your son got into some…
