im new here on the boards so im catching up. went fishing 1
day with a friend to the newport jetty. the bonito were
running heavy and we were catching all we wanted, i was using
my light tackle setup, a 5 ft rod, shimano stradic 2000 reel,
6lb test, and throwing a 3/8oz kastmaster in a mackeral
pattern, after a dzn or so bonies i was reeling in my
kastmaster and just as it came into view i saw a huge swirl on
it and felt an instant tug, i set the hook and the battle was
on! this thing almost spooled me, my buddy came over to help
because i had to run up and down these slippery rocks chasing
this thing, no idea what i had hooked up, thought a shark or
something, after i dont know how many minutes i could tell she
was getting tired, and as it came close we could not believe
what i had hooked...a king salmon ! a pretty dam big 1 too in
my book lol, we were just stunned, i was exhausted from
climbing up and over all these large rocks, i almost went in
the drink many times. we wieghed her, got some pics, and i
tried forever to revive her, but i wore her out too much, she
was gone, so a salmon bbq was had that night, here is a pic of
me looking haggard after a long battle on light tackle, sje
wieghed 12lbs even. a day to remember thats for sure.

That's a rad catch. Every now and then one hears about odd stuff at Newps--stripers, salmon, etc. Are they in legal season here? If not, that'd be a bad waste not being able to keep it, DFG would probably get you for wanton waste of fish, lol. Thanks for sharing.

I don't think they're in season yet. But, if it's dead I can see why you might take it. Either way though, way to go on the catch. Sounds like some fun boulder dashing.

You can't catch it again if it's dead!
