#14300, "Kelplantation ...DAY 3"

Last day of my 3 day vacation. The morning greeted us with beautiful skies and we took off to the kelpy nation with little delay.

No wind or current to be found, but nice bass were biting well.

Water was dirty, 10’ of vis and 60 degrees.

Just as was the case 2 days ago, they weren’t chasing lures. Spinbombs and swimbaits were useless, but Jetty Worms were on fire, and I just happen to have a few of them onboard. I forgot my camera but, my friends aren’t quite as stupid, and they brought theirs.

Started talking #### wouldn’t you know, I reached back like #### and I ####### the ###.

We fished the thickest stuff we could find and we worked it patiently and diligently with great rewards.

Aaron set a his rod down just long enough to grab a net for Mikey and I, we had a double hook up. When the dust settled his rod had gotten pulled overboard. Bummer. RIP

Aaron was using smaller jigs mostly 1/2oz, I was using beaver and craw tails on a 3/4oz, and Limited was using the 3/4oz with the big grub tail. We all did well with about a dozen fish each. The fish were in the canopy and on the bottom.

We fished from 7am til 1pm. I got a solid keeper ling crawling a craw jig across the bottom in a clearing.

This is what I want your jig to look like at the end of the day. That’s not from rocks it’s from teeth.I recently switched from 15 to 20 lb test, and I’m loving it.

Hey fishtrix, have you ever thought of using spectra or braid with those jetty worms? I plan on buying a few of them to try in the kelp out here in Santa Barbara and thought of using braid. Any thoughts?

Have you guys always found that the "Kelp fishies" are more apt to hit a bright colored jig (pink, Orange, Neon and so on) rather then the traditional fresh water bass jig colors like Green Pumpkin or Brown?

Lot's of people fish TJWs with braid with great success. I prefer mono. We typically use brighter colors in the kelp canopy, although i'm not convinced it matters.
