#2904, "Has This Ever Happened To You?"

I fished Salt Creek this morning for about an hour. Conditions were bad...surf too big and too many weeds. I caught and released 4 surfperch, and 1 yellowfin croaker. I have caught 2 surfperch at once (on 2 dropper loops) many times before, but today one of the little suckers inhaled both baits and was double hooked! They sure are hungry! This has never happened before, and I was wondering if anyone has double hooked fish before...any species.

On a 3/4 day boat a probably 4 years ago there was a wild yellowtail bite and me and the guy next to me hooked up at the same time. We ended up bringing in the same fish, both our hook in the mouth of the fish. Our lines even managed to stay pretty much untangled until the very end. I was too young and naive to realize that when the guy told the deckhand that my line had stagged his fish I was getting a raw deal. There was no way to tell who hooked the fish and it is probably possible that the fish ate both of our baits. Oh well live and learn. I guess since I was a 15 year old on a party boat I didnt get too much respect.

This happened to me, my Dad, and Grandpa when I was 7, that'd be '78. A 1#+ bull Bluegill ate all 3 of our worms in my grandfathers pond. We'd all cast near a Christmas tree that he'd sunk in his pond and were all using Porcupine quill floats. Grandpas float started to move toward my Dads. Grandpa said "You don't set the hook until the float starts to go under." The float never went under, the fish picked up Dads and then mine and headed down the bank with all 3 in tow about 6" apart, finally I set the hook and reeled in all 3 lines and the fish.
Truth can be stranger than fiction.

tight lines, Wade

Last November, fishing the mud off San Clemente Pier, my dine got real nervous, then my buddies dine got picked up, both lines moving, I'm thinking double- my friend swings first, my line stops- he's hooked into a solid head shaker- I reel up on my fish, lots of slack as John fights his nice butt, then we appear to be tangled- I gaff his 30 pound butt who inhaled both of our dines, two trap rigs hooked in her grill, looked like a Christmas tree decorated all pretty! Very nice fat female, with a big appetite!

A couple years ago I was surf fishing on a beach north of Cayucos. I always use a freshwater rod with 8-10# for surf fishing so thats all I had with me. Well anyways, I decided to go fish for some rockfish in the rocks. After a little while I got a bite and then snagged the rocks and lost my setup, so I tied up again lost it in the same spot. This happened 3 times when finally I caught the thing. It was an average size cabezon with my currently tied hook in its mouth along with 3 of my previous hooks. I removed all the hooks and let him go. Not exactly a double hookup, but I thoght it was wierd. -Phil

I did the same thing freshwater fishing whith my tube in a rock quarry for largemouth bass. I was tossing 8# test with a 4" purple power worm on a 0/1 worm hook. After throwing up on the bank and dragging my bait in to the water, I got hammered. I set the hook with moderate force and broke off. It was strange to say the least, because it wasn't that large of a bite. I quickly tied on another identical rig and casted in the same general area. Of course.... wham! This time I hooked em'. Pulled in a little 1.5 # bass. When I lipped him to retrieve my hook and bait, I could not believe my eyes. There was my current hook, worm, and weight, and to my dis-belief I also found my previous hook and worm stuck in the roof of his mouth. Very strange experience that also makes for a great story.

Later, Terry G.

You wouldn't happen to be a Dentist, or related to one I suppose? As in BBrumfield?

No Amish Ed...however I feel like some of the fisherman responding to my question are "fish hook removal dentists". Removing their very own 2 or 3 hooks from one fish is too cool...some fish out there must be like kids with many lip piercings! Tons of hooks in the mouth! Let's just hope they rust out ok!
