I'm no flyfishing expert, but there are (well...were) halibut around the base of the pier. I don't know about perch though.... Maybe near the point at ledbettor might produce.

Sand's is a pretty popular fly fishing spot. It's up north, right on coal oil point. Another spot is the sandbar at the end of the breakwall for the harbor, and the base of the pier as Frank suggested. That's pretty much the extent of my knowledge about fly fishing around here, so maybe somebody else has something to add.

my suggestion would be to start off by the pier then if tht doesnt produce the sandbar at the end of the breakwater would be a good choice for fly fishing for surfperch or corbina.

Winter is tough from shore around Santa Barbara. March through November you stand a chance, but mid-winter the bigger swells and colder water move the fish out usually. The pier and harbor area is really best between May and September. So don't give up but give it until March or so, like you said.

My experience has been the opposite. For me winter swells bring the beach structure. Last January through March we were picking up yf croaker, halibut, perch and the occasional WSB, smoothound, striper and leopard shark from shore on the fly. Seems like in winter the bars and holes develop that concentrate the fish. I pretty much give up fly fishing the shore in summer and switch to the kayak because the structure dissappears. Anyway, just my 2 cents. As far as places to fly fish, there are tons: Mondos, La Conchita, Bates, Carp State Beach, Santa Claus, Miramar, the harbor, etc. plenty of likely spots.

Cheers,
JD

Just North, to the right if you're facing the pier, is a jetty with a foot path, it's near the bait dock. Is this a good spot, anybody catch anything tossing into the harbor there?

We catch white seabass from the float tubes, on the other side of the bait receiver right there, but most of the time there's not much action from shore in that area. Better to fish by the wharf.
