#7240, "Ensenada surf & tube"

Went down camping and fishing from the 7th-11th. Stayed at La Jolla beach camp again which is right below Ensenada.
Wednesday 7th

This is the day we arrived. Set up camp in the afternoon. It was nice and sunny with a little breeze. I set up my lite rod with some of the lugworms I bought from bigfish. The surf looked really good but there was one big problem,There was lots of weeds in the water. I talking thick! Gave up after 30 minutes with no bites.

Thursday 8th

I got up around 6am and walked out to the beach. Water was flat and there was almost no weeds. I don't know what happened overnight but I didn't care. Went and grabed my rod and started fishing. With the lugworms I caught 7 corbina, 2 sand bass, and 2 senoritas. Most of the fish were small around 13-15''. While fishing I noticed halibut jumping after baitfish but only kept that in mind. In the afternoon I went for a walk along the beach and noticed corbs feeds in the surf. I walked all the way back to camp to get my gear. That afternoon I caught 6 more corbina also around 13-15''. The camp ground was very crowded and when they saw me catch fish they brought there gear to the beach but I was the only one catching fish.

Friday 9th

Got up at 5am and got my tube in the water at 6. I started fishing with 3'' Big hammers in Calico hunter. I stayed near the surf since I remembered seeing halibut jumping. I had so many of my swimbaits get tore up. I caught about 15 halibut from 14-20'' in 1.5 hours of fishing, plus a 17'' corbina. My dad also went with me and it was his first time tubing. He caught about 10 and a few sand bass. I was very excited to catch that many. I didn't think I would. Local fisherman take all the fish they can so fishing has not been as good. This is the beach where I surf fished for the first time with my long rod, right when I was about to give up I caught a halibut and many other fish later on. Since that day I've been hooked on surf fishing. Well that afternoon I fished for alittle while in the surf and caught about 5 corbs most of them about 15'' and a yellowfin croaker.

Saturday 10th
Got up again at 5am. Packed up the rest of my Big hammers and went out in my tube alone this time. I was using a 4'' smelt big hammer and this time I caught about 10 halibut but from 20-24''. Two fish were 24''. People on the beach could see me and they were amazed on what I was catching. Half of the fish I caught bit the BH only about 4 feet from me in clear water. It was cool to watch the fish bounce off the bottom and attack. When I told my dad how I was doing from the radio he got his tube and got in the water. When he got in I got out and started cleaning some of the fish. He was in the water only for two minutes and from the radio he told just caught a 23'' fish. He caught 4 more fish all over 20'' on a 3'' prizm rainbow trout BH. I also caught a couple more sandies that morning. In the afternoon my lugworms were almost all dead and started to smell. I still used them for only one 16'' yellowfin croaker from the surf.

Sunday 11th

My dad and I got up early again and went out tubing at the same time. It was very foggy this time. At first we both had a couple of hits and his plactic was ripped in half. Then all of a sudden the surf got big, the wind was blowing and it was still foggy. We waited it out in deeper water for awhile and almost got out cause it was so bad. About 45 minutes had past and we had no fish. We kept on kicking out further and then the water got flat again. All of a sudden Barracuda started boiling all around. From far out to 4 feet from us they were chasing bait. My dad was catching them on Big hammers and I was thorwning a krocodile. We both were catching a lot of barracuda from 20-25''. As we were fishing a school of big dolphins came right by us. It was a very cool. After that I noticed we were about 1/2 mile off the beach. Huge mackeral were also present. We kicked back to the beach catching cudas at the same time. When we got to the beach my dad
caught one more sandie and I got a calico bass. The halibut in the surf we not around. My dad managed 4 but they were only about 15''. After all that we packed up and headed back home. I had some fish, shrimp, and calamari at ensenada, man sea food is good.
The line at the border was bad. we waited about 2 hours. I'm still alittle tired but it was a fun trip.

All I can say is...awesome!!! (and great job on the fish too) I think you're caught more halibut in one day than I've caught my whole life.

Sounds like a blast! Do they have size limits down there on halibut like here? You got lots of corbs too which is nice!

Glad to hear you had a good time at La Jolla camp. You did very well on those pesk halibut!! Seeing that a nice drive doesn't keep you from going to where the fish are, I'd strongly recommend for you to try Bahia Soledad, located on the other side of Punta Banda. You can access this area through the Santo Tomas road (located at kilometer 46+ south of Maneadero). You can expect the number of fish that you caught at La Jolla, but you will definetly catch some really big corbina (personal best here is 7lbs. 4oz.-on bloodworm) & the surf is such that getting out on your float tube is easy. You also can fish the edges of the kelp for lingcods. Give this place a try!!!

Omar,
Thanks for the info. I've always thought about going there but I just never do. I'm pretty sure I'll give it a try when I go back next year. You'll see a much better report next time :D

Todd,
There is no size limit for any fish down there. I just wish I pulled out a big corb.

Anthony
