Fished Doheny from my kayak with a couple of float tubers today. Yanni and Tanaka were out there after launching through the surf!

I caught a 24" halibut on a live smelt, and a 23" one on my two pound test trout/perch pole with a 1.5" rootbeer grub rigged carolina style! Got the flattie on my way in while drifting and talking with Yanni in the surf.

We should have spent more time fishing shallow (6-10 feet), that was the ticket, but we were out a little deeper because of the surf.

Yanni caught a keeper halibut on a storm rubber anchovy. Tanaka caught some YF croaker and a halibut in shallow on a grub, and after talking with him he went back in to fish shallow on the south side of the creek so I didn't get his report.

I also caught a big (18") calico on a frenzy crankbait, on my first cast! I then tossed it about 50 more times for nothing.

Anyways it was pretty good for launching around 2pm. Lots of smelt in the water, looks good! We have been steady on the Halibut there except for a couple times, always get at least one or two legals.

Oh, and I flipped my Kayak, wearing dry breathable waders....brrrr

Quietman,

Good to finally meet you out in the water. By the way, the name is Kanaka (Hawaiian for Hawaiian). Your right about the action being better inside though a little more risky with the surf. After talking to you I ventured in shallower water and picked up several croaker all over 14inches. I caught the last one very close inside as I was kicking like a maniac to get to the shore before a big set could take me out. I was fortunate this time. Next time.........

Kanaka
