#14588, "PCYC Mako Tournament"

Had a whole long post typed out and it disappeared. Fished the PCYC Mako Tournament last weekend on the Team Okuma Pro Cat.

Here are the details...

Day 1 - Ran to the outer edges of the grid. No fish - Bad tides, not many fish in the 40 mile grid but the ones that were there, were good ones. Team OZ put a 747 pounder on the boat and only one other boat had a weighable fish (185#)

Day 2 - Fished the gap between Anacapa and Santa Cruz until we drifted to the edge of the sanctuary. Picked up and moved to the 1000 fathom curve. Had a rat 30 pound Mako doing hot laps around the boat. tried to pet him on his head when he would get next to the boat. He was ran off by a dimented seal that wanted to eat him. He showed back up right as the tournament ended so I caught him. Great fight... lasted about 7 seconds.

Let the rat go and emptied the chum bucket and started to throw the bait overboard. We looked up and saw a good sized fin coming at the baot which turned out to be a big blue. Caught it and as we were cutting it loose... abotu a 150 - 200 pound Mako was right below it. It sunk out so we went home.

Tough bite... only 4 fish weighed in for the two day tourney.

The new 28 Pro Cat is a sweet boat. Very good ride and fishes well.

Yes... can you beleive it? I actually went fishing.

The boat is docked in Dana Harbor. If there is an open spot next time we take it out, I'll let you know. The Mako fishing has been really good down south. Team Okuma took 1st in the release division two weeks ago with I think 17 Mako's released.

Where are you pulling out of? How far off the coast do you fish to target those makos? Great pics!

John...

The boat is at a slip in Dana Harbor. Most of our fishing will be out of there. We took the boat up to Oxnard for the tourney last weekend. We were fishing the outer grid in the tourney about 37 miles from Oxnard.

Thanks for your response. My brother and I have been trying to get into some sharks other than what we are catching in the SF Bay. I hope to make it out for some makos soon, but we are going to need to get some bigger gear. Those things look like this pull some line! Thanks again for your help.
