Try going to the dfg web site they give the times of the gruion run. I hear that frozen gruion is good bait fot halibut.

If you're on 'em, pin a live one on and toss it back out into the surf. The 'buts & wsb will follow the grunion to the beach. HANG ON!

Got 224 of them for our group of 7 at Hollywood Beach Saturday night. A couple of the girls in our group said they saw big flashes (or glows) right at the point where the waves break onto shore.

Last time I tried it I put a live one back out on the line for a Leopard Shark and 2 'butts. It's worth a try if they're running.
Tight lines, Wade

I've never caught or seen a halibut caught at night but I suppose if the buffet table is set, it'll tempt them. I tried a frozen grunion near sunset Monday and got a 15 inch yellowfin croaker and three farmed bites. There's something out there that likes grunion.

Next time try them live, about 15' out. You don't have to cast way out there when they're running. Hook'em around the collar bone like a 'chovie with a 2-3' leader and a 2-4oz weight on a slider. Put the rod in a STRONG holder and collect more grunion until you here your drag scream or see the rod go BENDO!
