#5664, "Suggestions for drylander initiation?"

I've got 2 cousins out from Oklahoma, and wanted to help them have a memorable first sighting of the ocean. They're 12 & 13 and want to see a shark. I thought I'd let them catch 1, so my ? is what is the best place to catch shark IYO around the greater Monterey Bay area as of 4/20or21/02 without shelling out too much$.
I was thinking of chumming off the East cliffs in Santa Cruz or going to New Brighton West of the rocky area to stay away from the bathers and chumming there. I don't like the fact that the prevailing current would take the chum through popular beaches in both cases. So where can I take them to chum for Leopards, Threshers, or whatever sharks. Also If we can see some tidepools and get some Mussels that would be cool too.
I'll be chumming with about 5 pounds of chopped Squid (which they'd never seen nor eaten before last night, YUM!), 2 pounds chopped Anchovies(they'd tried them once on pizza, YUCK!, but didn't know what a whole one looked like) and a pound each of chopped Sardines (they'd only seen canned) and Mackerel. I plan on thawing it out, mixing it with an = amount of sand, and chumming 1 cup every 5 minutes or so. We'll probably use sliding rigs with Squid or 'chovies for bait.

Best place that I have taken my boys is down to the Bay! Down at San leandro Marina off shore too, you can catch huge stingrays, lepords, 7 gills and tiger shraks, just from using squid! I tried e-mailing you back about the River thing but I guess it didn't go through? You asked if you went with us how much you'd have to pay, well it's only $2.00 to get in! You just bring your dinks and sandwhiches with you. When are your Nephews coming? This would be GREAT fun for them too, also I am Oakie Indian and my family is from Oaklahoma...weird coincidense.
Your Best shot for catching shark and stuff just for fun is San Leandro Marina, over by Oakland. Where abouts you coming from? We live out here in Manteca, so the Marina is about an hour from us, but if you own a boat you can always head out towards martinez/Pittsburg area too, and may catch a few. Let me know. Good fishing to you :)

The River trip sounds cool! We may have to try to get together sometime soon.
My current E-mail is a company one that all 4 of us use so it's not a good idea to contact me that way. I check these boards atleast 2X a week, at work, so post here.
As for San Leandro, Monterey Bay is closer for me here so that's why I mentioned spots over there. I've also tried the West side of the SF bay with good results but most of the good spots I wouldn't take the boys to (too rough of neighborhoods).

Just e-mail me at Fish4FunGal@aol.com. We'll discuss it then, and set something up....trust me, you will have a blast, and so would your nephews or kids, if you have any? Talk to you soon.
