I know that getting good dope on seabass is real hard in So Cal,(tight lips sink ships ) but has anyone been out to Catalina to scout around the bait grounds or ridges or beaches?

Have you heard of any squid anywhere?

How about local fish? P.V. Whites. Fermin. Vincente. Rocky. Haggerty's. Malago cove.

Hey Burgie,

If the vis. improves @ PV I'm going to do some freediving at several dive spots. This time of the year they should be there. I'll let you know what we see.

I saw them go nuts on Redcrabs one morning in PV this past June. Me and a buddy had a sick bite all to our selves right at day break. I've never seen them go like that on squid and I've been on some wide bites. There where seabass and calicos crashing everywhere. You could look down the coast and as far as you could see breaking fish everywhere coming through the kelp stringers. I've been fishing most of my life and I've never seen anything like that. Nothing even came close. If you've ever seen a huge school of breaking tuna that's what it looked like but remember these fish where in the kelp. I wouldn't have believed it if I didn't see it. Of course no camera.

I saw seabass come completely out of the water. They looked like salmon going up stream to spawn. Unreal it was the first time I had never seen sea bass break the surface like that. The calico's where so thick they were actually a menace because they would eat your jig before the sea bass had a chance so you had to sight fish the sea bass and cast on them when you saw a free swimmer or else every cast we were instantly on a 2-4lb calico. It wasn't hard to find a free swimmers they were everywhere and they didn't seem to be too spooky eihter. Unheard of for seabass. After catching several fish I broke out my 8 lb freshwater bass rod and started pitching Senkos at them. They responded with out hesitation. Awsome! The bite lasted for about an hour but the memory will last a life time. Sometimes you just have to be lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time. You just never know.

Hey Jerry, Glad someome had something to say about the elusive seabass. I love to hear about those types of bites. I was also lucky enough to see that type of action on croakers one time at Catalina.
My buddy and I had been searching our asses off for a day and a half. We must have run around the entire Island twice. We decided to drift the silver cnyn area for a butt for dinner when I noticed a batch of breaking cuda inside the kelp line up tight to the beach. We ran up to the spot to have a little fun with the 45's. As we got close I saw a 45# cuda come clean out of the water. With bars on it. The Seabass had pushed about a half ton of daylight squid up to the beach and were having they're way with it. The big calicos and some cuda were also mixed in with about every other kind of junk fish you could imagine. I'm not sure how many we caught, but the only thing that stopped us was the dark. The fished popped right at sunset (DARN) who's complaining? I never had to tie on a bait or get squid ink on my hands. Good Luck, and if you have some KA-KUI beads rub them for me. I have to take a friend to the stone tommorrow. He doesn't want to go to Castaic because he always gets blanked there. Did you see the last couple of trips I had? I don't know what he's thinking!!!!!!

Ouch the stone is pretty tough right now. You might want to pick up some live bait to dead stick while your fishing while plastics or crankin. Based on what I've been hearing I thought castiac was starting to pick up. If we get a few days with weather like today there should be a lot of fish moving shallow. Pudd is starting late this year. As I remember Pudd has always been an early spawning lake. I don't believe the water has anything to do with it either. They use to bite early in the same water conditions in past years. Oh well maybe you'll be there when the bite busts open. I hope you are. Good luck. Go gettem Burgie!

I don't know what's up with the stone. I was trying to come up with a reason and the water color seemed possible. You're probably right. The fish we got yesterday looked like they just came out of deep water, so it's probably late then never. If you're going to Castaic E-mail me at captcaliente@yahoo.com.

Thanks for the info Burgie and I was thinking of trying Castiac maybe next week. I send you some email. I've got some seabass info that might be helpful for you too. I've heard a rumor that's a little bit of a bite going on along the coast the last few days. No confirmed reports but the area that was mentioned has held fish in the spring in the past.

Hey, maybe we should start heading in. It's startin to blow a little. No! They're biting! Just one more? What's the limit? Let's stay overnight. I can call in sick!
Hey! The boat's acting funny! I'M JUST GLAD WE MADE IT HOME!

I would do that again and again for that type of bite. Hey, what are you guys catching? BARRACUDA! You ever see a CUDA bend a D-8 that far? It's time! We'll do it soon on somebody's rig.

Before the rain, there were some WSB shot at White Point, Point Vicente and two coves south of Malaga Cove (sorry I don't know the name). Fishboy is correct about Rocky Point. I hope this helps.

If the squid show in the Redondo Canyon then you better drop everything your doing and get out to Rocky Pt. ASAP. Make sure to pick up plenty of ice you'll need it. This time of year another option for PV is fishing the inside stringers. Look for dirty green water especially if it's moving really good on the inside. I'm about to mention something I'm sure you already know but you need to be watching out for boilers and high spots in the coves. Also watch the surge and tides. There's some boat busters on some of the PV inside spots. I would say you have a better chance of finding seabastion up the line. I would start looking above Dume. Weather it be PV or Malibu they will eat the dean. I think even more so this year seeing as squid is very scarce at the moment. Good luck and I'll see you on the water.

TX, Jerry,
Those elusive fish get me all fired up. We used to go up in tight inside the Avalon wreck and the stick on a high tide, and the water had to be off colored. The fish are hard to get in but if they are there it's fun. Back then we fished the sabas. I'm sure the lack of squid is why we are not hearing any seabass dope. I'm sure they are in the area. we've been spankin the freshwater bass lately so I haven't gotten out on the ocean in a while. I'm gonna go over to Catalina on wed or thurs with 100 lbs of fresh frozen and see what I can find. The troll motor dr is doing surgery on my 782 so I'm gonna have to give the largemouth a breather. Good fishin.
