#9739, "Finally a corbina!"

I have been surf fishing for the last five years and have never brought in a corbina. I have had my share of perch, but the corbinas always eluded me. Saturday, 5-17 I finally landed my first corbina after the advice and tip-off from dball. He caught one the week before, same place at Henry's beach. Both of ours were 21 inches, but fortunately for me, I am the only one with a picture to prove it. Caught it on a rootbeer grub. Can't wait for the next five years to go by before I catch my next.

Nice Corbina indeed Wetakaya!

May I suggest that you might increase your chances greatly of cathing them much more frequently if you use natural baits such as Sand Crabs and Fresh Mussel.

I'm not familiar with the area where you nailed that beauty but I can tell you that from now until the end of October Corbina will be inshore in large numbers. I grub for Perch with usually very good results. My record for Corbina on plastics would have to be recorded as incidental. What I like to do in the summer is take both with me down to the beach. I have a fly vest that I wear that allows me to be fully self contained and I wear string around my neck to which a tin can is attached that I have full of Sand Crabs. Using the Carolina Rig , I alternate between bait and grub. Just my .02 worth.

Good Luck!

Aztecwin

Right on Warren, now that I see the photo it looks a lot like the one that I caught last week. But yes, you're the only one with a picture to back it up ;-)

Too bad I flaked on you Sat, otherwise I could have been there to see it myself. As for yesterday, check out my post below. Not much going on except trying to avoid psycho drivers. Not sure that I want to go back to Henry's for a while, unless you want to drive.

Do you think we might stand a good chance of getting more corbina if we try bait? Worth a shot, how about next weekend?

Congrats on the nice looking Corbina. I can tell by the ear-to-ear grin that you were stoked to catch that fish. Hopefully you won't have to wait long to catch another.

I agree with Aztecwin, I have better luck using sandcrabs. I've been casually surf-fishing for the last 5 yrs myself and have gotten more into it in the last 2 years. I haven't caught very many, but the few Corbs that I have kept all had sandcrabs in theire stomachs.

But hey, I caught one on a grub (motor-oil/red flake)laced w/pro-cure calico cocktail sauce, so who knows. When I fish grubs, I use scents to increase my "odds" as I need all the help I can get.

once again, good going on that nice looking fish.

What's up Marc? :D haven't seen you in a while, now that Greg and Mel aren't near the folks house anymore. I didn't know you shared a passion for anglin'. We should go out sometime. Unfortunately, my stupid friends and family have got me all tied up until the summer. I have like 3 weddings and a bunch of other dates to go to. It will all be fun, but I would like to have some time to fish. Anyways, my friend Dan and I will probably go out surf fishing again sooner than later, so let me know!

And Dan, Mr. Reply #2 or 1, whatever...my brother has some time off next week, end of May. We will most likely head out again sometime that week in the afternoon. Give me a ring and we'll do business. This time, bring a camera so we can post your fish! :-) Later!

:) Thanks for the advice! I have tried using sandcrab a little, but I really have no idea how to hook the little bastards! I always end up killing them, or tearing them in half before they even hit the water. I have goten a few perch off of them, but it really frustrates me too much and usually makes me go back to grubs! Is there a good website/picture you can get me on a good way to hook a sandcrab? Thanks again for the tips!

Dude, you surfing the net from the classroom again? Haha. I'm going to be in SB all three days this coming weekend. My buddy is in town from SF and we can go to the beach and introduce him to some perch fishing. If I don't bring a camera, he'll probably catch a couple corbina!

The following weekend 5/31, I'm moving out of my apt and back to my folks' place. I might be too busy moving to do any fishing ;-)

I have caught and mostly released corbina exclusively on sandcrabs. I rarely ever grub fish, but getting one on a grub is much harder and a true accomplishment...nice pic and great going!

Cograts! Must be a good fight. What was the weight and length of leader used?

Hey man, or girl(I assume it's the former). I was fishing with about 2 1/2 feet of 6 lb leader. I used some of dball's Big Hammer grubs and a worm hook, quarter oz. weight above a swivel. How do you fish them? Someone showed me this set up and I have just stuck with it. Do you know how to hook a sandcrab effectively? Thanks!

Warren, I use the dime sized sandcrabs and I just hook them from the bottom and out through the top. And yeah, the sofshells do tend to "fling off" but for the most part it works for me.
