#809, "Best days to fish"

I'm planning on taking some time off work in late March to go after some pigs. According to moon phases, what days would be best to fish, the fish should start spawing soon. I'm not sure what moon phase is best. Can anyone tell me some dates or explain the whole moon phase thing. Thanks

Today and tomorrow will probably be pretty darn good for sight fishing if you're at the right lake. I'd look for the same moon next month
, 2 to 4 days before full. I have been kind of keeping and eye on the period 3 to 5 days after the new moon too. Seems to be a time when big fish are getting caught. Don't forget that it has a lot to do with the weather too. I looked at when I saw a lot of bed fish last year and it didn't seem to have anything to do with the moon. It had a lot more to do with getting 3 or 4 really nice hot days in a row (like right now). I believe in the moon's influence I just don't completely understand it yet.

There's a full moon Tuesday night... do you think the fishing Wednesday (day) will be bad?

Well I sure wouldn't stay at home because of it. I never stay at home because of weather or moon or whatever.

Do I think it will be good fishing? Probably not. But ... if you're sight fishing and the weather is stays hot and sunny, or if a storm pops up and starts sliding in and we get plenty of cloud cover, that could be a plus for the fishin.

You see how this game works? There's a lot of factors. Things can change hourly during the day. Rick Clunn talks about it. He is very in tune with what's happening day to day and hour to hour out on the water. Hearing him talk about that was very influential to me. Even if I go fishing 20 times and I never see any correlation between the moon and the fishing, I'm still aware of it. I try to be aware of everything at all times. Time of year, time of day, air temperature, water temperature, moon phase, angle of the sun, wind or lack thereof, and just the "feel" in the air. There sure are times when things just feel dead to me and by recognizing those times, it helps me to know when to go somewhere else or try something else. That's what I was talking about when I caught that 13-7 at Coyote. The bank I was fishing felt dead. The opposite bank had some sun on it and looked like it had some life to it, so I headed over there. There's other times when things just feel electric in the air and I almost know that the fishing is going to be good. It was in the air big time at San Pablo when I got on those bigger fish. You could feel the storm coming and I know that the fish felt it too. Then right after it started raining you could feel it just die and I knew it was over. I felt it the day I caught that 8 at Spring Lake. A small front blew in and right as it was coming in, you could feel it big time. I actually started getting excited and throwing my trout plug with a ton more confidence than in the morning when it felt slow.

But hey, it sure isn't anything that I can write down or explain to you in person. It's just a feeling, a feeling that you learn more about every time you go fishing and do more than just stare at the water. Look around, look up in the sky, look at what the birds and the other critters are doing. Remember what happened every day and you'll start to get a feel for things. All of a sudden you'll go to the lake and get out of your truck and look around and go ... oh baby they're gonna be snappin today :o

Thanks for the feedback. Looks like I'm going fishing Sunday! I'm not sure where yet... but will post a report on Thursday.

By the way - I think the full moon is actually on Wednesday...
