Small Lakes
In a smaller lake I would probably start with the buoyant, again focusing on the headwaters and the points or deep water. If the fish were small I might go to the small pins minnow, or if they were close enough to shore the 1/16 oz panther martin. I've noticed with brown trout however, that no matter how small they are, they will always go after the 2 ¾ inch pins just as much as the smaller one, so if there are browns in the lake I'll probably stick with the longer minnow. Look for weed lines in small natural lakes because the fish will cruise these looking for freshwater shrimp and hatching insects. Make long casts but don't over look the shallows because fish in small lakes will often cruise grassy banks hoping for crickets or whatever.
