Small Streams

It used to be that I fished panther martins and rooster tails almost exclusively in small streams. I still use these two lures a lot, but the pins minnow makes an appearance on the end of my line more and more these days. With the panther martin a reel, reel, reel, pause retrieve works good, especially on stupid planters that need a second to catch up to the lure and hit it. My favorite little spinner is a silver 1/16oz panther martin with a yellow body, that is so thrashed that it doesn't quite run straight and limps along perfectly with a jerky retrieve. Sometimes they like it on a steady wind especially in shallow water, so just experiment around a bit until you figure something out. I really should mention here the importance of moving around when you are lure fishing for trout. No matter what water you are fishing, unless you find the mother lode of trout, it always pays to work down the bank, covering the water and increasing your odds. I always laugh watching people camped out on a lousy piece of water casting a lure over and over again to the same spot. Trout may be wary sometimes, but trying to tease them in to biting like a bass is one tactic destined for failure.
