#12435, "Inshore salmon limit report from a 12' Porta Bote, a ka..."

On Thursday 7/15 my son caught 2 salmon, about 10 lbs each right outside the Pillar Point Harbor Mouth (Princeton Harbor just north of Half Moon Bay). This could be a kayaking opportunity because he did this from his 12' Porta Bote. This is nothing new. From time to time, but not every year, when I lived in Half Moon Bay the salmon would drive huge schools of anchovies against the El Granada Beach, Princeton Breakwater there, and into the harbor. I got many limits (thus my my use of "salmonoid") in my 14"aluminum skiff there at such times, sometimes right at the mouth of the breakwater or even right outside the surf of El Granada Beach. I used to mooch. My son used a Deep Six diving plane, although the fish were shallow, with one or another type of Rotary Salmon Killer (the original or the new Franco type), with no dodger or flasher.

If the fish stay there (watch for diving birds and boat activity) this could be an opportunity for a kayaker to catch a norcal salmon, which I have seen done there. Kayaks used to be rented in Princeton, and maybe they still are. Do not take a kayak much past the mouth of the breakwater, and do not launch from the beach into the ocean. Launch only from the beach inside the harbor or from the launch ramp there. There is also a small chance for stripers or halibut near the breakwater.

I hope the salmon are still there for my August norcal fishing trip.

My son has also been limiting on salmon, just like everybody else, on party boats (e.g., Captain Johns Outlaw boat captained by Tom Monaghan) out of Pillar Point once or twice a week for weeks. Limits have been had nearly every day, but a skunk is possible. Do not go when there is a south wind; my son out of Princeton and a friend out of Monterey were both skunked at separate locations the same day about a week ago when there were southerlies.
