#12586, "Do grunion runs occur on San Simeon State Beach?"

Hey all,

I was just wondering, do grunion runs occur as far north as San Simeon State Beach?

I will be camping up that way with the family the week of August 15th, and I'd love it if I could get the kids to see that.

Thanks

They occur a lot farther north than that. I've seen them in the Monterey Bay area quite often. Whether or not they like the beach at San Simeon, I don't know. I've never seen them at Pismo even though my family would vacation there every other year for 1 to 2 weeks. Ask at a local bait shop and they should be able to tell you.
Tight lines,
Wade

GRUNION RUNS
Grunion spawn on all of Southern California's long, sandy beaches
from early March through mid-August each year. Anglers may only use
their hands to catch grunion, and the season is closed during April and
May each year.
The times refer to the grunion runs at Cabrillo Beach near the Los
Angeles
Harbor entrance. The times of the runs vary along the coast. San Diego
runs are about five minutes earlier and Santa Barbara area runs are
about 25 minutes later. The best activity is usually in the second hour
of the run and on the second and third nights of the four-night
spawning period.
The next run will be August 17-20. Times for this run are as
follows: Tuesday, August 17, 10:40 p.m. to 12:40 a.m.; Wednesday,
August 18, 11:20 p.m. to 1:20 a.m.; Thurday, August 19 (actually
Friday, August 20), midnight to 2 a.m., and Friday, August 20 (actually
Saturday, August 21), from 12:55 a.m. to 2:55 a.m.
The Department of Fish and Game publishes an annual brochure
called "California Grunion Facts and Expected Runs.'' It is available
free if you mail a self-addressed stamped business-size envelope to
Grunion, Department of Fish and Game, 4665 Lampson Avenue, Suite C, Los
Alamitos, CA 90720. It is also available on the DFG's Web site at
www.dfg.ca.gov/mrd/gruschd.html.

Grunion can be found as far north as San Francisco, but they are only common south of Point Conception.

I have camped at the camp ground probably over 30 times over the last 10 years. I've always stayed at Washburn which is the upper primitive camping area with only runny water and out-houses. I always launch 15ft boat at Leffingwell Landing and fish from a couple miles south to about 10 miles north. I absolutely love fishing the shallow water Rockfish and occasional Salmon and Halibut. The next time I go up there, I'm going to try some surf fishing on some of the sandy beaches for Barred Surf Perch. I was going to go up there for Labor Day but opted to take my big boat down to the Hotel Coral in Ensenada MX for the holiday weekend. Hoping to hook into a Big Eye or big Yellowfin. Hope you have fun up at San Simeon and I look forward to your report when you return. HOOK-UP!!
